“This news is extremely upsetting, and our thoughts are with Matthew’s family and friends. We would ask that his family’s privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“We have contacted fellow medical students and are reminding members of the University community that they can request support should they need it by contacting our Wellbeing Team.”

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "At around 10pm on Sunday evening we were called to the sudden death of a man in his 20s at the staff accommodation block at Great Western Hospital.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. A file is now being prepared for HM Coroner.”
