A Birmingham university is continuing the long-running regeneration of its campus by unveiling plans for almost 500 new student bedrooms.
New proposals have been lodged to build 496 bedrooms off Pritchatts Road on the University of Birmingham site in Edgbaston.
If approved as submitted, it will see several shared townhouses built across two separate blocks along with a 482-space, multi-storey car park at the 'Pritchatts Village' site to the north of the campus.
The application site currently houses the 289-space Pritchatts Road car park, a second smaller car park and vacant land next to the Ashcroft and Oakley Court halls of residence.
This latest application follows refusal of a previous submission on the grounds it was "unduly dominant" so now has fewer bed spaces with almost 100 per cent shared bathrooms as the previous bedrooms were to be all en suite.
The university currently owns and manages 5,178 student beds across three villages in Edgbaston and Selly Oak, according to the application, but is only able to house 77 per cent of its accommodation guarantee scheme in its own stock.
More than 1,700 other students in 2018/19 had to live in either private student accommodation in Selly Oak, Edgbaston or the city centre or in houses of multiple occupation in nearby suburbs.
The university is expecting a rise in student numbers over the next decade which will put further pressure on its on-campus accommodation.
Its long-running, £600 million regeneration of the campus has already seen a new library, sports centre with 50-metre pool and 'The Vale' halls of residence completed alongside labs and teaching buildings.
Other planned projects over the next few years include a new school of engineering, a molecular sciences building and a life sciences campus in Selly Oak.
The new halls of residence have been designed by Jewellery Quarter-based practice Glancy Nicholls Architects with planning consultancy from Savills.
