University graduate abandons biology degree to set up drive-in dessert shop

A university graduate ditched her biology degree to follow her love of baking and set up a drive-in dessert shop.

Ikraa Riaz, 24, has loved baking since she was 10 years old but never dreamed she would be able to make a living from it.

But after leaving university with a biology degree last year, the graduate decided to set up Your Girl Can Bake, selling her tasty creations on Instagram from Higher Ardwick.

Now the young entrepreneur has launched the drive-through dessert service where customers receive a platter of handmade fresh desserts in the comfort of their vehicle - and Ikraa says people from all over the UK can’t get enough of it.

She said: “We are the UK's dine in your car dessert shop.

"We only launched last week but the response has been absolutely amazing.

"We have had people driving hundreds of miles from all over the country to come and try our treats. People are coming all the way from Cumbria and London.

"I've always loved baking. When I was little I would find any excuse to bake cupcakes and brownies for friends and family, and I would always try and perfect the recipes or get creative.

"When I started Uni I was only baking in my spare time but I knew when I finished my degree that I wanted to get back into it and I always had a desire to own my own business.

"I've always had a dream to have my own cafe so to make a living doing what I love is a dream come true. "

Ikraa runs the business with two family members and creates all her treats by hand, which are made to order and fresh every day for the customers who book in a slot to drive up and tuck in.

Customers can book a time to arrive and order up to 10 dishes on each tray from a menu of sweet and savoury plates.

She said: "We're just a team of three, I started off by myself and then recruited two family members.

"We are really big foodies and we love going to the drive thru and sitting and having a chat in the car.

"Sometimes sitting in your car is just much more private and personal because you don't have people around you like you do in the restaurant.

"I wanted to create a place where you could have that drive in experience but for desserts and sweet treats.

"It took a bit of time to design a table that would fit in any car but you can have one in the front and one in the back and they fit at least 10 dishes and drinks on each one.

"If you have five people in the car there's enough room for every person to have four dishes each and the portions are very generous."
