For many young people, fleeing their country because of violence or hunger usually means forfeiting their education. In a bid to solve this problem, the UN has launched a programme in Italy, in partnership with the Italian foreign ministry and several universities, so that students who pass a selection process in Ethiopia can study in Italy.
Ethiopia has a long history of welcoming refugees and currently has an open approach to asylum seekers. Thanks to the support of the UN High Commission for Refugees, the lucky few chosen to study in Italy can travel safely by plane, without being subjected to the dangers of human traffickers who organise the risky crossings of the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
