A University Challenge team has been brutally mocked after thinking Govan was an 'island in the Firth of Clyde '
Fans of the hit quiz show couldn't believe it when The Exeter University team gave their answer about Govan, while also managing to butcher the pronunciation of the well known Glasgow area.
The team, who were taking part in a quarter-final match-up against Imperial College London, pronounced it as Go-Van while replying replied to host Jeremy Paxman.
Jeremy had asked them: "The village of Lochranza is the site of a geologic unconformity that helps confirm Hutton’s principle [of unconformity].
"On which large island on the Firth of Clyde is it located?"
The right answer to the question is the Isle of Arran but Exeter got it badly wrong, with viewers soon branding their response 'ridiculous'.
One viewer said: "The worst part of the Exeter team on University Challenge getting it wrong with Govan is not the typically English mispronunciation like "Go, van", it's that they thought it's an island in the Firth of Clyde."
Another added: "Did he just mistake Govan for an island?"
Someone else said: "Am I imaging it or did one of the teams pronounce Govan, Go-van?"
Another commented: "Maybe they visited Govan Cross Shopping Centre where a nice lady got paid to advertise its virtues in an automated announcement with the same pronunciation "GO-VAN Cross Shopping Centre", mwa mwa sweetie."
Exeter were defeated by Imperial College London by 205 to 70 points.
