University Challenge audience slammed as 'rude' for laughing at Lucy Beaumont's qualification

Viewers of University Challenge have come to the defence of Lucy Beaumont after the audience laughed when she revealed her qualifications.

The comedian appeared on the celebrity special of the BBC academic quiz which aired on Boxing Day as  former University of Hull alumni went head-to-head with graduates from University of Liverpool.

But those watching at home has slammed the studio audience of the Jeremy Paxman fronted show as 'rude' after she told them she has an NVQ in cleaning.

Which actually, isn't a joke at all.

"Audience laughing at the idea of an NVQ in Cleaning on #UniversityChallenge is embarrassing, rude and speaks volumes. Get your s**t together," raged one.

Another said: "Did everyone just laugh when Lucy Beaumont said she had an NVQ in cleaning? On Christmas University Challenge? Real indictment on the audience if so. #UniversityChallenge."

"Appalling response by the audience," added a third.

However, it wasn't just the those in the studio that thought it.

"She's a comedian, I thought she was joking," said one.

Lucy was joined by TV historian Dr Tracy Borman, author and former political special advisor Joanna Nadin and Professor of Physics Matthew Halsall.

The opposing Liverpool team was made up of actor Anna Maxwell Martin, author Emma Jane Unsworth, broadcaster Roger Bolton and leading haematologist Professor Beverley Hunt.
