Universal launches Saturday film watchalongs online, including Halloween and The Breakfast Club

Universal is helping film fans to come together during lockdown by launching a new watchalong club online.

The studio is encouraging movie lovers to revisit some of its classic releases at home, organising watchalongs every Saturday throughout the rest of May.

Things begin with classic slasher Halloween on May 16, followed by Apollo 13 on May 23 and The Breakfast Club on May 30. All the watchalongs begin at 9pm UK time.

Special guests including Jamie Lee Curtis – who starred in the original 1978 Halloween and its 2018 sequel – and David Gordon Green, who directed the latter, will be commenting on the movies, while fans can get involved by joining in on Twitter. The terrifying horror follows serial killer Michael Myers and helped establish the slasher genre in the late 70s.

The following week, former NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly will host the Apollo 13 screening; the film charts the journey of astronauts onboard the unsuccessful but heroic mission to the moon.

After that, it's 80s classic The Breakfast Club, which tells the story of four students who form an unlikely connection during Saturday detention. Nerdist will be hosting the screening.

All fans need to do is buy or rent the films and tune in at the designated times, and can join in on the watchalong using the #HalloweenAtHome, #Apollo13AtHome or #BreakfastClubAtHome hashtags.
