Universal Credit payment date changes for Christmas 2021 and New Year 2021

By Kate Wilson & Simon Meechan

Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day are all bank holidays, which affect the dates Universal Credit will be paid this year.

As well as being Bank Holidays, Christmas Day 2021, Boxing Day 2021 and New Year's Day 2022 are all on weekends, so the bank holidays get pushed into the following week. Again, this means benefit payments like Universal Credit will not be made on the usual due days for many.

But households should not have to wait longer for their Universal Credit payment. Gov.uk states that when "payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you’ll usually be paid on the working day before".

Essentially, that means anybody due Universal Credit payments over the Christmas and New Year weekends and following bank holidays should be paid on the Friday before the bank holidays.

If you claim the benefit, make sure you are aware of when you should be paid this year.

Christmas 2021 and New Year's Day 2022 Universal Credit payment dates

Christmas and Boxing Day 2021

As Christmas is on a Saturday and Boxing Day is a Sunday, there will be bank holidays on Monday December 27 and Tuesday December 28.

That means that anybody whose Universal Credit due payment date is the 25th, 26th, 27th, or 28th of December should get their payment on Friday December 24, which is Christmas Eve.

New Year's Day 2022

New Year's Day is on Saturday, January 1. As that's a weekend, the bank holiday will be moved to Monday January 3.

That means anybody whose Universal Credit due date is the 1st, 2nd or 3rd of January should get their payment on Friday December 31, which is New Year's Eve
