Universal Credit hell for family after joiner forced off work due to falling ill

A joiner has told how Universal Credit crippled his young family after he had to stop working due to an operation.

Marc Williams depended on food banks to survive when they were forced on the controversial benefit last year.

The dad-of-four needed an operation on his knee and was unable to work at all as a result, reports North Wales Live .

The family's income was hit so much they also had to sell Mr Williams' van and tools he used for work.

"If the system was just a bit more generous to help us out in the short term it would save all of this," Mr Williams' partner Kati Ellinor said today.

"We have gone from a family getting by, to a family struggling.

"We have had to go to a food bank and, as good as they are, it is mortifying."

The couple are among the 2,164 couples with children relying on Universal Credit in north Wales alone.

Mr Williams, from Wrexham, north Wales, went under the knife last year but is still recovering.

The Department of Work and Pensions said Universal Credit policy has benefits for working parents, such as being able to claim a higher percentage of childcare, but still it remains a highly contentious subject.

Particular areas of criticism are the sanctions regime and the gap between claiming and payment.

Organisations like poverty charity Turn2Us and Gingerbread which supports single parents, say it's pushing families further into poverty ands increasing people's reliance on food banks.
