Universal Credit claimants can get up to £812 extra cash

Universal Credit claimants may be able to claim more than £800 if they are struggling to make ends meet.

An extra payment can be granted on top of usual Universal Credit payments, if it's to cover things such as a broken oven, or having to pay funeral costs. The lowest amount that can be given is £100, and sometimes payments can be as much as £812.

It's known as a Budgeting Advance and it's a loan that will need to be repaid. The DWP reclaims the cash through your regular Universal Credit payments.

This means your payments will be lower until you pay it back. If you no longer get Universal Credit you will need to repay by other means, such as from wages or other benefit you may be getting.

People may be able to claim up to:

  • £348 if you’re single
  • £464 if you have a partner
  • £812 if you or your partner claim Child Benefit

To be eligible for a Budgeting Advance you must have been getting one or more of these benefits for the past 6 months:

  • Universal Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • State Pension Credit

You must have also earned less than £2,600 (or £3,600 together for couples) in the past six months, and you need to have paid off any previous DWP loans.
