Universal Credit and Child Benefit payment dates for late May Bank Holiday 2019

The year is flying by and we are already heading for the second of May's bank holidays.

The late May Bank Holiday, sometimes known as the Spring Bank Holiday falls between Saturday May 25 and Monday May 27.

And crucially for benefit claimants and parents, the dates affect when important payments are made.

Previously, such dates proved a major headache for Universal Credit claimants - because payments being made early because of a Bank Holiday would be counted as two payments in one month.

This mean they would then receive a much smaller payment the following month - making it much harder to get by.

Thankfully, a High Court battle by four single mums earlier this year resulted in the judgment that the regulations were being wrongly interpreted by the Department of Work and Pensions.

Despite this, it is still important to know when payments are being made over the Bank Holiday - so families can budget for the month ahead.

Universal Credit payments for Late May / Spring Bank Holiday 2019

Universal Credit is assessed and paid in arrears on a monthly basis - it is the bringing together of six previous benefit payments into one single monthly payment.

Payments are calculated from the first day that a claim is submitted.

The first payment is made seven days after the end of the first one-month assessment period, meaning a five-week wait when you initially apply for the benefit.

Payments are then made on the same date every month. But there is some variation when there is a bank holiday.

Depending on your bank, the funds are available sometime after midnight on the day they are due, usually in the early hours.

According to ToughNickel, Yorkshire Bank is among the quickest, making funds available from 11.30pm the night before to 12.30am on the day itself.
