Universal Credit and benefit changes starting in April - what they mean for you

With the new tax year starting Monday 6 April, those receiving benefits like Universal Credit may see the amount they get rise.

The coronavirus pandemic has shone a spotlight on the welfare system, with half a million people applying for support due the impact on the economy.

The UK Government had already planned some changes to the system, but the outbreak prompted the chancellor to go further.

With the four-year-long freeze on benefits payments due to come to an end, many people on Universal Credit are likely to see a modest increase in their monthly payment.

The standard allowance on the controversial benefit will increase by £5, or around £70 per year.

The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced he would increase the benefit by over £1000 a year for the next 12 months in light of the pandemic.

If you are 25 and over, that means your monthly Universal Credit payment will likely be around £405 per month.

In Scotland, you can also choose to have your payment made twice monthly, and the housing benefit portion of the unified benefit can also be paid to your landlord to help avoid housing arrears.

Pensioners will also benefit, with the state pension set to increase by around £343 a year.

According to the Daily Record , that works at a weekly rise of just over £5.

Scots have also been urged to ensure they are claiming the means tested benefits such as council tax which they are entitled to.

Scottish Government figures reveal that the number of people claiming a Council Tax Reduction (CTR) has fallen by over 80,000 across Scotland since 2013.

Edinburgh residents are set to see their council tax bill increase by 5 per cent, and Citizens Advice have launched a tool to help make sure you get the help you are entitled to.
