United States loss to Serbia secures worst major tournament finish

The United States Men’s basketball team secured the worst performance in the team’s history after losing to the Serbian national team in today’s consolation bracket game, 94-89.

The loss secures a 7th-place finish for the USA at best, which is the lowest they’ve finished in a major tournament in the program history. Nevertheless, the United States still qualified for the Olympics by making it to the quarterfinal stages and will have the opportunity to redeem themselves at next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.

Myles Turner, center for the Indiana Pacers and this year’s Team USA, took issue with those who criticized the team as a failure after players sacrificed their summers to represent their country.

With the loss, especially after most of the nation’s top NBA players decided to sit out this year, there will likely be heightened expectations for game’s biggest stars, including LeBron James, to take the stage in 2020 in order to help Team USA win the gold medal in Japan next summer.
