United States break Fifa World Cup records with 13-0 thrashing of Thailand as Alex Morgan scores five

United States have set a new Fifa World Cup record after pummelling Thailand 13-0 in their Group F match in Reims.

A meeting between the competition’s most successful side and a country whose only other appearance came four years ago in the 2015 World Cup was always going to be a mismatch.

And that gulf in class was evident from the off as the US set about their business in ruthless fashion.

Alex Morgan opened the scoring after 12 minutes, scoring four more times before the final whistle.

Rose Lavelle (x2), Sam Mewis (x2), Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd were also on the score sheet as the defending champions set a new record winning margin in both men and women World Cup competition.

The US scored 10 times in the opening 32 minutes, another four in a 10-minute period in the second-half before adding six more in a frenzied closing 16 minutes.
