United Airlines said Monday that it will close its Narita Airport flight attendant base due to a downturn in revenue caused by the spread of the novel coronavirus.
In addition to Narita, the company has also decided to close its bases in Hong Kong and Frankfurt. "We have been cutting costs and increasing capital, but we have to continue making tough decisions to survive the crisis," United said.
The company said that flight attendants at the three bases may be able to transfer to other bases, but declined to comment on specific measures to maintain their employment. Many Japanese flight attendants are believed to be stationed at the Narita base and it is expected that some may be furloughed.
