United Airlines plane declares emergency over UK during flight to Chicago

A United Airlines flight has been forced to turn around after declaring a mid-air emergency due to a technical issue.

The flight took off from Amsterdam, but had to turn back as a result of the problem.

It was above the UK when the incident occurred, according to Flight Aware.

A map on the site suggests it was over Blackpool when the emergency was reported, but it was not forced to land immediately.

United flight 2811 had been bound for Chicago, but turned around an hour into the journey.

The nature of the emergency is not yet known.

A statement from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport described the matter as a "standard procedure, saying: "The plane came back to Schiphol out of precaution, due to a technical cause."

It added that the plane landed safely.

Mirror Online has contacted United Airlines for details.

The plane is a Boeing 787-10 twin-jet.

A report on the Flightstats website at the time of the alert: "This flight is currently redirected back to the origin airport.

"It appears that it is returning to AMS."
