United Airlines flight makes emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport as fire crews race to scene

A United Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport as fire crews raced to the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to the airport at around 11.38am to assist Edinburgh Airport’s fire service after a Boeing 757-200 plane bound for Newark Liberty International Airport made it to Fife before having to touch back down.

There were 164 customers and a crew of eight on board.

A SFRS spokesperson said: "“We received a call at 11.38am and sent fire appliances, one height appliance, one heavy rescue unit and one incident support unit.

“We stood down at 11.59am and airport fire service dealt with the incident."

A United Airlines spokesperson said: “Our team at Edinburgh Airport provided assistance to customers of United flight 39 (Edinburgh - New York/Newark) today, which returned to Edinburgh Airport due to technical reasons.

“The aircraft landed safely at 10.38am (local time) and customers disembarked normally.

“United flight 39 has since departed Edinburgh for New York/Newark and is expected to arrive at 4.11pm (local time).
