Victoria Police is setting up a specialised unit to investigates allegations of family violence made against police officers.
Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said 11 officers would be deployed within the Professional Standards Command to investigate claims against Victoria Police employees.
"We do hold our own to a much higher standard and hold them to account," he said on Monday.
He said the new unit would help to ensure the community feels confident to report family violence when police are involved.
"We want to make sure that it will be thoroughly and independently investigated by people with expertise," Mr Patton said.
"In the past we haven't done as well as we should have in this area."
Victoria Police has 31 family violence investigation units, with 415 specially trained police officers.
It conducted more than 90,000 responses to family violence events in 2020.
