Unique gift for autistic boy inspired to raise money for the NHS by Captain Tom Moore

An aviation-loving youngster who was inspired to raise more than £1,800 for the NHS by Second World War veteran Captain Tom Moore has received a reward for his efforts.

Jack Berry, from South Hylton, started a step challenge with his cousin Maisie Jones early in the coronavirus lockdown planning to support South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

The pair had hoped to raise £500 for the trust, which runs Sunderland Royal Hospital, where Jack, who is autistic, is a ‘frequent visitor’ for check-ups on his autism and general mental health.

And the initiative, which has more than tripled its original target, caught the eye of RAF expert Rowland White, who sent a signed copy of his book ‘Cleared for Take Off’ to WW2 enthusiast Jack.

“I was talking about all the planes Jack has been on on the flight simulator and the museums we’ve been to,” said mum Sara Berry.

“I was quite surprised by it but obviously Jack really likes it and has had a good look and written a letter back thanking him.”

After she tweeted a picture of Jack with the book Rowland replied: "Thank you Jack! I’m so pleased you like the book.

"Seeing the big smile on your face has made my morning!"
