Unique Edinburgh flat in former toll house dating back to 1800s hits the market

A "unique" flat located on the site of a former Edinburgh toll house, and dating back to the 1800s, has the hit the market.

The four-bedroom apartment at 1 Belford Road boasts incredible views over the Water of Leith and Dean Bridge.

The property, which is in a free-Tudor style, was built on the location of the former Drumsheugh Toll in 1891 and is said to be of "much historical interest" according agents Coulters Stockbridge. The apartment itself can be found on the first floor of the detached house, which sits on the banks of the water.

The house was in fact built as a studio for the artist Charles Martin Hardie and was designed by George Washington Browne who was keen to ensure a sweeping vista over Dean Village and the Water of Leith.

According to Canmore the words 'Drumsheugh Toll' can be found on the front door, however the old toll house which stood on the site was demolished in the 19th century.

The property currently for sale inside the building comes with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen/diner, and a drawing room. There's also a striking spiral staircase which leads to the principal bedroom.

Coulters Stockbridge say: "The interior layout has been adapted to make clever use of the commanding views of the Water of Leith and the Dean Bridge, in particular the first floor, with a spiral staircase leading to an expansive principal bedroom with picturesque studio style windows providing a breathtaking vista.

"Boasting a further three bedrooms and two bathrooms at street level as well as a dual aspect kitchen/dining room, this property will make a wonderful family home, with immediate access to the city centre and all the cultural highlights on offer."

The property listing can be viewed in full on the Zoopla website.
