Unique Christmas tree made of lobster pots dazzles Scots after festive light display

Arguably one of Scotland’s most unique Christmas trees has been lit up for the first time this year in the Highlands.

The 16ft tree in Ullapool has been built using dozens of creels used for catching shellfish in the local area.

It has become an annual festive tradition for the village since it was first constructed in 2016.

Hundreds would normally gather for the grand switch-on event for the tree, but plans had to be shelved due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

But it hasn’t stopped the locals in Ullapool posing proudly next to the structure in the run up to Christmas Day.

Residents have been sure to show off this local legend with Scots across the country over social media - and it’s safe to say they’ve been wowed by the sight of it.

One person wrote: “What a wonderful celebration of a regional industry.”

Another said: “Would love to see it in person. Looks beautiful.”

Hundreds of people normally flock to the Highland village for the grand switch on, but this year's event was a little more subdued to the coronavirus pandemic (Ullapool Fire and Light)

Even fairly local MP Angus MacNeil has been singing the tree’s praises.

The SNP representative for the Western Isles wrote: “Probably the most valuable Christmas tree in all of Scotland, if not Europe?”

Ullapool Fire and Light, the organisation behind this amazing tree, is still confident that a good number of locals in the region will still pay the structure a visit.

They wrote: “It was a beautiful night and regrettable that we couldn’t hold our usual switch-on event.

“But we hope everyone able to see them will enjoy the Ullapool lights this year.”
