UNIONISTS have been left fuming after the SNP said they were "raising a glass to Argentina" ahead of the World Cup semi-final.
On Wednesday morning, the SNP issued a press release marking the first anniversary of Scotch whisky becoming the first-ever international product to be protected with special Geographical Indication status in Argentina.
In the release, which is titled "SNP raise a glass to Argentina", SNP MSP George Adam is quoted as saying: "There is no better day to raise a glass to Argentina, and I'm sure Scottish households will be united today and well into the night as we mark this historic occasion."
While the SNP release was focused on the historic Scotch whisky agreement, it was published as England prepare to face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.
Unionists have hit out at the SNP's suggestion they are supporting Argentina over England, with Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay saying that while "football rivalry is fine", the SNP's "anglophobia is ugly, small and pathetic".
"As a proud Scot, I wish the very best of British to our English friends," he added.

Fellow Tory MSP Stephen Kerr said: “Honestly some SNP MSPs and MPs need to take a day off from being professionally offended and remember this is a game of football.
“England are our next door neighbours. They are our friends, neighbours and colleagues, not some invading army. They are playing Argentina in a World Cup semi-final, not trying to annex George Square."
He added: “Nobody is asking them to paint their faces, wear St George’s Cross waistcoats, or start singing Three Lions. Just wish our neighbours well, enjoy the football and stop turning everything into another nationalist grievance.
“Come on England, and to the SNP’s permanently miserable brigade, get the chip off your shoulder, and try enjoying yourselves for once.”
It comes after a Scottish Conservative councillor hit out at "idiot" Scots who are too "blinkered" to support England in the World Cup semi-final.
Moray councillor Tracy Colyer slammed Scots who are planning on supporting Argentina in their World Cup semi-final match against England on Wednesday, saying those who do should be “fecking ashamed”.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander urged Scots to back England, saying Scottish fans should be “bigger” than being “anti-English”.
