Union minister Anurag Thakur launches Swachh Bharat drive in Prayagraj

PRAYAGRAJ: The nationwide Swachh Bharat programme was launched in Sangam city on Friday by the Union minister for information and broadcasting, youth affairs and sports, Anurag Thakur. Being organised to commemorate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the campaign aims to dispose of 75 lakh kilograms of waste across the country by October 31.

The campaign is being organised through a network of 744 youth clubs affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) of the department of youth affairs, ministry of youth affairs and sports (Government of India), and institutions affiliated to the National Service Scheme (NSS). It is being carried out in 2.5 lakh villages spread in 744 districts across the country.

During the programme organised at MNNIT, Prayagraj, Thakur said, “The country is celebrating 75 years of India’s independence, and therefore, we should take vow to make our country free of plastic waste.”

The minister said it was a pleasure to start the Swachh Bharat programme from Sangam city, and that the message emanating from here would inspire the entire country. “The objective of the campaign is to create awareness, mobilize and ensure participation of people across the country in the disposal of waste, particularly single use plastic waste,” said the minister.
