Union govt to issue Rs 175 coin to mark IIT-Roorkee's establishment

ROORKEE: To mark 175 years of the establishment of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, the central government will issue a Rs 175 coin, according to a gazette notification by the Union finance ministry which happened late last month. While the notification didn't specify any date, it is expected that the coin will be released on November 25, when the institute celebrates its Foundation Day.

As per the notification, the coin will be made with a composition of silver (50%), copper (40%), nickel (5%) and zinc (5%). On one side, the coin will have the James Thomason building, the main administrative building of the institute engraved on it. While the upper periphery of the coin will have "Bharatiya Praudyogikee Sansthaan" written in Devanagari, the lower periphery will have its English translation "Indian Institute of Technology". The other side of the coin will have India's national emblem -- Lion Capital of Ashoka -- in the middle and "₹175" written on the lower periphery.
