Union chief slams council plans to shift May Day bank holiday

Union members have objected to West Dunbartonshire Council moving the May Day bank holiday to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Public services across the country have shifted the holiday to Friday, May 8 rather than Monday, May 4 in order to take in the special event.

Some councils have granted both days to their staff. However West Dunbartonshire Council is cancelling the Monday and replaced it with the Friday instead.

This has infuriated members of Unison who have formally opposed the change.

Val Jennings of Unison said: “The May Day holiday is a workers’ holiday.

“They are doing away with the bank holiday for this year and moving it to the Friday for VE Day.

“We propose that the council maintain the Monday holiday and VE Day as an additional holiday.”
