Union accuse audio plant boss of treating Coatbridge factory workers with 'total contempt'

UNION chiefs have accused a manufacturing boss of treating workers at a Coatbridge factory with “total contempt”.

Up to 70 jobs are on the line with the Tannoy audio plant on the Rosehall Industrial Estate set to close.

The plant's owners, MUSIC from California, intend to move the manufacturing work to Zhongshan in China and relocate related research, development and marketing posts to Manchester.

A consultation period between staff and management got underway in May but Philippines-based chief executive Uli Behringer says there will be no further talks.

And GMB Scotland – who claim basic questions from the devastated workforce remain unanswered – are furious.

GMB Scotland organiser Ude Adigwe said: “This highly skilled and long-standing workforce has been treated with total contempt by Mr Behringer and senior management from the outset.

“It's bad enough that workers learned their livelihoods were under threat by an email sent from halfway around the world.

“But they have now spent an entire summer talking to a brick wall in their efforts to try and save local employment.

“MUSIC's latest decision to walk away from consultations suggests that they are now looking to get out of town as quickly as possible with little to no concern of the impact on their workers.”

The union added that MUSIC claim they “remain committed to looking for ways to avoid dismissals”.
