Uninsured motorist arrested in Belfast for driving while disqualified

A male motorist was arrested in Belfast city centre just past midnight on Saturday on suspicion of driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

He was detained after police from the Auto Crime Team stopped his vehicle on College Avenue.

The incident was recounted on the Police Belfast City Centre Twitter account @PSNIBelfast in a 12.42am post, with an accompanying photograph.

It read: "Auto Crime Team have just arrested a male on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and no insurance following this vehicle stop on College Avenue in the city centre. #KeepingPeopleSafe #WeCareWeListenWeAct."

According to the Motor Insurers' Bureau, there are around one million uninsured drivers on the UK's roads.

It is also estimated that every three days someone has an accident involving an uninsured or a "hit and run" driver.

As well as being liable for the cost of an accident and any costs associated to the resulting claim, an uninsured driver could also receive a fixed penalty fine of £300, have their vehicle seized, face a court prosecution with the possibility of an unlimited fine and being disqualified from driving, be subject to a higher insurance premium and have six penalty points added to their licence.
