Uninsured driver fled scene of horror crash – before returning to grab suitcase and fly off on holiday

Greater Manchester Police / SWNS

A “disgraceful” uninsured driver has been jailed after he fled the scene of a horror crash before returning to his car for his suitcase and flying off on holiday.

Taylor Moss, 24, caused a three-car crash on his way to Manchester airport when he tried to overtake a taxi in Rochdale Road, Oldham.

Greater Manchester Police said his BMW 116d hit an oncoming Toyota Yaris before ploughing into another vehicle at around 1.10am on 17 September last year.

Moss fled the scene with his partner, but returned to collect his suitcase to fly off to Tenerife.

Three passengers in the Yaris had to be cut free and suffered life-changing injuries.

Moss claimed he was not driving the car at the time of the crash and that he had been dropped off at the airport by his parents.

During his two-week holiday, he tried to report the car as stolen, but police found his DNA on an airbag that had been deployed during the crash.

They then established Moss and his partner had fled the scene and returned a short time later to collect their suitcases from the boot of the car.

Moss pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, failing to report a crash and failing to remain at the scene of a crash.

He was jailed for three years at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday. He was also banned from driving for four years and will be required to take an extended test after his ban ends.

Speaking after sentencing, PC Phil Williams said: “To flee a scene of a collision is one thing but to come back and retrieve their suitcases and fly off on holiday without any second thought for the victims who were trapped in their vehicle is utterly disgraceful.

“I sincerely hope that during the time that Taylor Moss is behind bars, he realises the magnitude of what he has done and what impact it has had on all of those involved.”
