Imagine an 800,000 acre forest - 30 times the size of the city of Paris - and imagine how much carbon it would absorb in a year. It is the approximate equivalent of 1m tonnes of CO2, which is what Unilever has saved in its manufacturing network since 2008.
Unilever announced the 1m tonne CO2 savings milestone at Climate Week Paris 2015, hosted by The Climate Group.
The business has reduced energy consumption by 20%, saving €244m (£173.2m) in the process. All the electricity purchased by Unilever factories in Europe and North America is now from renewable sources, while initiatives all over the world have played their part in reducing energy use.
And if that 800,000 acre forest is hard to imagine, here are some other ways to think about saving 1m tonnes of CO2:
One year’s emissions from 210,526 passenger vehicles, or 137,552 homes’ electricity use for one year;
Total emissions from 112,523,911 gallons of gasoline, or 1,074,113,856 pounds of coal burned;
The carbon sequestered by 25,641,026 tree seedlings grown for 10 years, or 7,721 acres of forests preserved from conversion to cropland in one year.
