Consumer goods group Unilever on Tuesday said its meat-substitute business will start supplying plant-based patties to 2500 Burger King branches.
The FTSE 100 firm’s The Vegetarian Butcher will make the products for the Rebel Whopper.
They will be sold in 25 countries in Europe to begin with, and are due to launch in the UK next year.
No financial details were disclosed but The Vegetarian Butcher’s boss Hugo Verkuil said a “significant” amount of patties will be made to meet expected demand.
Verkuil said a lot of people are willing try meat-free goods.
Unilever added that more people are shifting to flexitarian diets worldwide, and “with this partnership Unilever is accelerating its strategy to expand its portfolio of plant-based foods”.
David Shear, president of Burger King EMEA, said: “We are confident that the Rebel Whopper is the sandwich everyone has been waiting for.”
The deal comes just under a year after Unilever bought the company, founded by Jaap Korteweg in 2007.
