Unidentified objects that appeared to be drones were observed Thursday night flying near the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda Ward and other locations in Tokyo, according to eyewitness reports.
According to investigative sources, Metropolitan Police Department officials patrolling the Imperial Palace detected a shiny object flying in the area at about 8 p.m. Thursday.
Though they monitored the object, the officials soon lost sight of it, according to the police.
In separate incidents, objects that appeared to be drones were observed in Shinjuku Ward and elsewhere in Tokyo, the police said.
The law prohibits the operation of drones over densely populated areas and around important facilities.
The MPD is investigating the series of cases as suspected violations of the Aviation Law, as it is believed the drones were operated without permission.
