Uni confirms Newcastle student among Hunter's new positive cases

THE University of Newcastle has confirmed a student living on campus has tested positive to COVID in the latest Hunter virus cases.

The university told staff and students on Monday that the student, a member of "our on-campus student community at Callaghan", was a close contact of a previously confirmed case.

They had already been in isolation on campus, and were counted in the numbers announced by health authorities on Monday morning.

"This brings our total positive cases directly impacting University of Newcastle campuses to six," the university said in a statement.

"They have been moved into the care of NSW Health and we wish them all the very best with their recovery."

Hunter New England Health figures showed that eight of the Hunter cases are from Maitland, five from Newcastle, two from Lake Macquarie and one from Port Stephens.

Of those, 13 are linked and three are under investigation. Hunter New England Health said six were infectious in the community.
