Unheard George Michael song to appear in Emilia Clarke's Wham!-themed romcom Last Christmas

A new George Michael song recorded in the months before his death will appear in a forthcoming film inspired by the music of Wham!

Last Christmas, a romantic comedy scripted by Emma Thompson and starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, is said to be loosely inspired by the Wham! track of the same name, while Michael’s music will provide a soundtrack to the rest of the movie. And director Paul Feig has now confirmed that one of the tracks has never been heard before.

“He was putting together his new album when he passed,” Feig told the BBC. “And one of our tracks is one of those songs, and it’s just an absolutely amazing song that I’m so excited the world is going to get to hear now.”

He continued, “It’s a very celebratory song, I would dare say. And we were able to play the entire song, which is almost six minutes long, in the film. Because when you get a song that has never been heard, you don’t want to just use, like, 15 seconds of it. The song starts at the end of the film, and then goes into the credits.”

Feig also told the BBC that while Last Christmas isn’t a musical, Michael’s music “affects the story”, adding: “There are a couple of sections where the actors are actually interacting with the music and other sections where George’s music is driving, or underscoring the story. So it’s a nice mix of being neither a jukebox movie nor straight up musical.”

Last Christmas will be released on 15 November.
