Temora Shire Council has pleaded with drivers to "be patient and comply with road closures," after a truck driver bypassed two road closure signs before getting stuck on a flooded road overnight.

In a post to its Facebook page, the council said "whilst road closures are inconvenient, they are in place for very good reason."

"Many roads have experienced severe damage [from flooding] and cannot be accessed by vehicles until they are repaired."

Temora State Emergency Service Deputy Local Controller, James Golf, said crews had to rescue a truck driver from flood waters just before three o'clock.

Mr Golf said the SES' message is always "if it's flooded, forget it".

"Even people around here, they always get complacent, [thinking] 'I've driven this road a thousand times, it'll still be there'," he said.

"But you never know what's going on underneath the water."

Mr Golf said it only took one error in judgement for the consequences to be "catastrophic".

Floodwaters peak in Ungarie

The nearby Ungarie community is experiencing its fifth flood in a decade.

Ungarie Rural Fire Service Group Captain Lindsay Henley said the flood level looked like it peaked about 3.30pm.

"Luckily at this stage it hasn't impacted on any houses, but obviously there's a lot of water in backyards."

Mr Henley said there are no gauges monitoring water levels near the town.

"We tend to have floods quite regularly through Ungarie so we've got our own gauges," he said.

"We gauge on somebody's … back fence of their house, we gauge on bells on a mailbox, we gauge on a tree … on somebody's farm."

Mr Henley said the flood level was not far off the 0.9 metre peak predicted using those informal indicators.

"We're rather pleased with our prediction — it came pretty true in the end," he said.

He said the Ungarie community "got away with it this time."

"In 2012 … it was 1.9 metres over the bridge — so an extra 0.8 of a metre — we had over 70 houses … and businesses inundated," Mr Henley said.

Ungarie's Central Hotel is 100 metres from the flood water.

Aaron Cooper has been pumping water from the pub's cellar because of seepage from the Humbug creek.

"Hopefully we can just leave it like that, and no one's houses are going to be affected."
