'Unfortunately' - Jurgen Klopp makes blunt Erling Haaland admission as Man City transfer confirmed

Jurgen Klopp believes Manchester City are buying “a beast” in Erling Haaland as he urged his Liverpool players to keep ignoring Pep Guardiola’s side.

City confirmed on Tuesday they had agreed in principle a £51million deal to sign Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Klopp has previously expressed his admiration for the Norway international, who netted for Red Bull Salzburg against Liverpool in 2019.

And when asked if the signing would make City stronger, the Reds boss replied: “A lot. Good player. City was never and will never be a team that wins because of one player.

“They have a specific way to play, and I think Erling will all of a sudden realise that he will score a lot of goals at the second post where he just puts his foot on it. He will love that. He is a real beast.

“He was injured a couple of times at Dortmund but when he’s fit he’s a real beast. Unfortunately, he is a really good signing.”

Liverpool trail Premier League leaders City on goal difference having played a game more after they came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa with goals from Joel Matip and Sadio Mane.

The Reds still need City to drop at least three points in their final three games to have a hope of winning the title, with Pep Guardiola’s side in action at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday and West Ham United on Sunday before Liverpool play again in the Premier League at Southampton next Tuesday.

And asked if he was continuing to ignore City, Klopp added: “For me, it’s no problem. After the last game, I invited the boys to follow my mindset. In my mind we were six points behind before the last game. Then we won and they lost and now we're only three (points) behind.

“With that mindset I came here today. It means we are still chasing like mad. Honestly, maybe because I am a bit dumb it works for me and the boys are invited to follow that. The boys won’t waste energy, we just know we have to win. That hasn’t changed.

“Now we have to really recover and play the FA Cup final because there’s obviously no mercy anywhere. Qualifying for all the finals is absolutely massive. We play incredibly big games. From Thursday on we will prepare the boys.”
