'Unfortunate' statue design leaves people in stitches after cheeky discovery

The leg of a Lincoln Imp on a new statue design unveiled in the city has left locals in stitches.

The hanging limb on artwork looks more like a part of the male anatomy, some have suggested.

The full-sized sculpture, designed by Wild in Art which helps with similar events across the country, is one of 30 that will be painted and scattered around the city this summer from July 4 to the first week of September.

The designs have been created by local and national artists, and is a follow on from the success of the baron and knights trails in previous years, which attracted thousands to the city as they clamoured to visit them all.

Designs for the statues are still in the planning stage, with the exact details of the event yet to be confirmed.

However, the unpainted design from Wild in Art has been unveiled – and it has left some with another impression.

The statue features the imp sitting cross-legged with one of its legs hanging down.

But, many people have claimed that it looks more like a penis – and a rather large one at that.

The claim was made my Lorraine, who is a mum, on Twitter .

She wrote: “Every couple of years in Lincoln we like to celebrate our beautiful county. So far we’ve had painted Barons, painted knights and now it’ll be painted Imps... I don’t know where to start with this..!”

That prompted a wave of responses from people who agreed.

“Hung like an imp,” one person joked on the social media site.

“Don’t know why he is looking so miserable with that between his legs," laughed another.

Another person wrote: “Hung like an elephant comes to mind."

“Just don’t paint it pink,” said one person, while another added: “That’s an unfortunate placement.”

After hearing about the comments, a Wild in Art spokesperson said: “The mischievous response on social media is in the spirit of the imp and shows that people are looking forward to this event.

“Once decorated the sculptures, which are based on Lincoln’s iconic imp will make a vibrant, colourful and fun art trail celebrating the city.”

Lincoln BIG, has teamed-up with Wild in Art, The EBP and St Barnabas Hospice for the rail later this year.

As well as the 30 statues, 60 half-sized Imps will be on show as part of an education trail being run by the EBP.

There will also be five community imps in place as well.

Lincoln BIG hopes that the event will be a similar success to previous years.

A Lincoln BIG spokesperson said: “We are working towards producing our best Trail to date and we are looking forward to seeing our Imp characters taking over the city this summer.”

The event will help to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice and the Lincoln Creates Fund.
