'Unemployed IITian': Graduate shares placement struggles, seeks advice on job or PhD

An IIT graduate has sparked discussion online after sharing his difficulties in securing a job despite preparing for software development, artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science roles. The student said he is now weighing whether to continue searching for employment or pursue a PhD.

The graduate shared his concerns in a Reddit post titled, "Unemployed IITian. What should I do: Job or PhD?", outlining his experiences during campus placements and the uncertainty he faces after graduation.

In the post, the IIT alumnus said that, like many of his peers, he focused on preparing for software development, AI/ML and data science positions.

He revealed that he appeared for seven to eight interviews across various roles, including product management, machine learning and data science. However, some applications were rejected in the initial stages, while others did not progress beyond the HR round.

The graduate added that although he had invested considerable effort in data structures and algorithms, he was unable to secure even a single interview specifically for software development roles.

After completing his BTech, he said he continues to work on data structures, algorithms and system design while undertaking an off-campus internship at a small startup that offers limited compensation.

Concerns over AI drive PhD dilemma

The student said he is considering pursuing a PhD, partly because of concerns about the future impact of artificial intelligence on technology jobs.

In the post, he questioned whether he should continue applying for jobs until the end of June or shift his focus towards doctoral studies, particularly in the field of quantum computing.

He also said he felt pressure to make a decision quickly and sought advice on whether to continue preparing for technical interviews until he secures a job offer.

Social media users advise caution

The post attracted responses from users who urged the graduate not to make a major career decision based solely on concerns about industry trends or job market uncertainty.

One commenter argued that pursuing a PhD without genuine interest could be another form of following popular trends. The user encouraged the graduate to reflect on his personal interests, strengths and long-term goals rather than relying on external opinions.

Users share experiences and alternative career suggestions

Another user, who identified as an IIT graduate, said the current job market remains challenging and claimed that research and development opportunities are difficult to find. The commenter added that they had turned down a ₹23 lakh per annum job offer because they were committed to pursuing a PhD.

Other users suggested alternative career paths. One recommended appearing for the CAT examination and pursuing an MBA, while another advised exploring opportunities abroad.

A separate commenter cautioned against pursuing a PhD without a strong interest in research, noting that doctoral studies require years of dedication, patience and academic commitment. The user also suggested considering alternative career options, including government sector roles, if they align more closely with the graduate's interests and long-term objectives.
