Some go to great lengths to smuggle drugs into Spain, concealing them in breast implants or in ham and cheese sandwiches.

But not a 34-year-old who was arrested last week in the city of Isla Cristina in southern Spain. Police caught him driving a car with more than a tonne of hashish piled up in neatly wrapped bundles around him.

The Guardia Civil officers tasked with surveying the city’s coastal area said they first noticed the car because it was driving around at 2am with the headlights switched off.

Their curiosity piqued, they approached the 4x4 vehicle. It was then that they saw the dozens of packages piled up in the car. Guardia Civil said they seized 40 bundles of hashish, weighing a total of 1,220 kilos.

The 34-year-old stands accused of public health offences. The investigation remains open while the Guardia Civil attempts to pin down the origin of the drugs.
