David Harbour’s old Instagram post about Lily Allen has not aged well — at all.
The Stranger Things actor is facing backlash after fans rediscovered a 2019 post he shared about his now‑ex‑wife that’s hitting differently since the release of her brutally honest new album, West End Girl.
Back then, Harbour posted a clip of Lily performing with a caption that now reads as awkwardly ironic: “This rockstar’s beautiful video just hit www.nowness.com. She’s very sad in it. She wrote it before she met me… Luckily. Because after meeting me, your life becomes unbearably happy and you can never write sad songs again. You can only write about shitting rainbows and farting glitter. Cause you’re so. Damn. Happy.”
It’s a far cry from the heartbreak Lily’s singing about in 2025. Dropping last Friday, West End Girl tells the story of a marriage gone sour with honesty that’s part car-crash, part catharsis.
According to multiple outlets, Lily spent just ten days recording the 14-track album in the wake of their December 2024 split — a process she’s described as an emotional whirlwind.
While Harbour’s social media once read like a series of inside jokes and love letters, the internet has circled back with fresh eyes on posts from their 2020 Las Vegas wedding, where he dubbed Allen “The People’s Princess” and himself her “devoted, low born, but kind credit card holder”.
Old uploads about her sex toy business, too, have re-emerged.
In one, Harbour wrote: “I’m getting my wife one. Because of archaic idiotic ‘norms’, sex positivity and female pleasure seems hard to discuss in polite society… Dumb. Have fun out there. You won’t go blind, I promise, cause believe me, from my vast rich history with self love, I know from whence I insta-caption”.
But if there was ever a facade, it’s well and truly down now. Across West End Girl, Lily lays out the mess in excruciating detail, name-checking Madeline — the woman implicated in an alleged three-year affair — and singing lines that make no effort to gloss things over.
“We had an arrangement / Be discreet and don’t be blatant / There had to be payment / It had to be with strangers / But you’re not a stranger, Madeline,” she recounts about their marriage arrangement, all while sifting through receipts and revelations.
Fans, predictably, have gone to town in his Instagram comments. One quipped that the old sex toy post “aged like milk” — and there’s been little sign of Harbour’s usual banter since, with comments now locked on his account.
And just to up the stakes, PEOPLE reported this week that the pair’s Brooklyn townhouse — yes, that one with the room Lily said the couple could “argue” in — has hit the market for $8 million.
Neither Lily nor David has issued a public statement about the latest round of scrutiny, but the saga is very much playing out in real time. If nothing else, it proves one thing: the internet NEVER forgets, nor do Lily Allen’s celebrity pals who have taken her side on social media.
