Undrafted free agents are taking over the NFL

The NFL Draft is a seven-round affair, giving teams a chance to find a future Pro Bowler or two out of the 224 picks available.

However, often times the best players are found after the draft in the undrafted free agent pool. And lately, teams seem to have more luck with undrafted free agents than they have in the later rounds of the draft.

As of Week 17 last season, there were more undrafted free agents in the league (551) then there were fourth through seventh round picks (540).

The Seahawks have long been lauded for finding hidden gems after the draft, most notably Pro Bowl receiver Doug Baldwin, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2011.

Last season’s find was Texas defensive tackle Poona Ford, who posted one of the highest run defense grades in the league his rookie year.

Seattle only has four picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, and while it is likely they will make some trades to acquire more picks, they may resort to finding some more diamonds in the rough in the undrafted pool.
