Underwear experts have warned people against following advice on a viral TikTok post which claims the pocket in your pants is to help organise them neatly. The post, which has had more than 2.8m views, claims there is a single purpose for the pocket - or gusset - in women's knickers.
User @aniezabay1 says in her video that the ‘pocket’ has been designed so people can fold underwear neatly. She says the using the extra flash of the garment is for holding the fold in place.
And many of her viewers were amazed at the suggestion with Gary Mac asking: "Why didn't they teach us this at school?" Others joked about their uses with Caleb saying: "It's there so you can store your money."
However underwear experts from Lounge Underwear have revealed this is NOT true. And they say the gusset or ‘pocket’ actually has a much more important role for those wearing them.
Emily Blount, Head of Product at Lounge Underwear said “Many underwear fabrics aren't great for vaginal health so this ‘mini pocket’ actually creates a protective layer, helping to prevent sweat which can lead to unwanted bacteria which can cause a range of problems including irritation and itchiness, which can be uncomfortable and take time to recover from.
"Cotton is natural fibre and absorbent of moisture (sweat, fluids etc) but most importantly breathable so sustainable fabrics like what we use at Lounge for the gusset are designed to protect you.
"We also feel that the extra coverage is great to add a layer for modesty, especially if wearing something that’s sheer."
"Although this hack appears effective for storing your underwear, we recommend not doing this as it could stretch out or affect the fabric of your favourite knickers if consistently bundled together. Your lingerie will stay high quality for longer if you lay it out in a single layer in your underwear drawer.”
