'Underwear and used condoms' dumped on busy beach

Formby beach has seen visitors flocking to the Sefton coast every day of the current heatwave - but a local litter picker was disgusted at what she found in the sand.

A volunteer litter picker posted in the Facebook group Formby and Freshfield Beach Litter Angels saying she had found "used condoms" among the rubbish dumped at the beach.

She said: "[We] had the unfortunate task of the dunes where there was underwear and used condoms. We have taken gas cannisters away with us."

One Formby local told the ECHO : "It's the same thing all the time. It's always 'Formby people don't want people in Formby' and it's just not true. We want to welcome people from everywhere because the beach is beautiful and that's why we live here but it's not going to be beautiful for long."

The 48-year-old resident, who asked not to be named, regularly walks her two dogs on the beach in the morning and has become sick of the mess left behind by visitors.

The dog owner said: "We used to go on sunset walks but we don't do that anymore because of the fear that they will step on a hot BBQ. I don't like it now because a lot of people are there till quite late at night."

Barbecues and alcohol are banned on Formby beach, with Sefton Council and National Trust trying to ensure people follow these rules.

Despite this, remnants of burnt out barbecues were found along with beer and wine bottles by the 48 year old resident.

She said: "I don't know what goes through people's heads. We all love Formby beach and we live in Formby for the reason that is obvious to everyone.

"It's gorgeous and it's beautiful, but it's just not a nice place to live at the moment. We want to welcome people in but it's getting everyone's backs up."
