A force spokesperson said the death is believed to have followed a collision involving a motorbike at Wigg Island Nature Reserve.

This morning when the ECHO visited the park, situated between the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal, a police underwater search team wagon was parked on an access road running alongside the main part of the island and towards where the Mersey Gateway bridge passes overhead.

Several officers in standard officer uniforms boarded the wagon and it left at around 10am.

Two patrol cars were exiting the access road as the ECHO arrived at 9.40am.

An automatic number plate recognition car and unmarked utility vehicle were also present on the access road near a section of undergrowth and trees that had been taped off on the canal-side of the road.

There was no obvious presence of collision debris or disturbed foliage.

The road is about 1.25km in length and links the main park access with a hazardous landfill facility and the entrance to a rough track that runs towards Moore.

No further details of the incident have been released at time of writing, although police last night urged any witnesses to make contact with Cheshire police on 101, quoting incident reference IML 1054649.".

In a statement issued this morning, a force spokeswoman said: "At 7pm on Thursday, August 5, police received a report that a man had been brought to Halton General Hospital, on Hospital Way in Runcorn, with serious injuries and sadly died.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances however at this stage officers believe he had been in a collision a short time earlier.

"The collision involved a motorbike and had occurred on Wigg Island in Runcorn.
