Undertaker hops on his bike to raise money for the Ayrshire Hospice

A cycling undertaker will hop on his bike to raise cash for a good cause.

Alan Hetherington is pedalling 125 miles in one day as part of a marathon 'Tour de Funeral Partners' journey to help the Ayrshire Hospice.

The big hearted fitness fanatic, who works at Ayr's ML Williams, will make the journey between the company's five Scottish branches on Tuesday.

And he's hoping for a fair wind to help him on his way.

Alan, of Prestwick, said: "My aunt was in the Hospice a few years ago and received great care, so this means a lot to me.

"I had wanted to do a sportif but due to Covid restrictions it wasn't really possible, so my colleague Morgan suggested I do my own.

"So I came up the idea of touring the Scottish funeral partners in the one day.

"The last 20 or 30 miles will probably be a struggle but I'm hoping for a good tailwind to help me on the day."

Former police officer Alan, 52, will set off from Ayr at dawn on Tuesday and take in Glasgow, Bellshill, Carstairs and Newmilns before arriving back at teatime.

He said: "Doing it alone will make it a bit more difficult - when you have company the miles tend to go in quicker.

"I might get my girlfriend to pick me up when I arrive back at the branch here, rather than cycle the two miles back to home to Prestwick!

"It would probably be the hardest part of the journey to be fair.

"But the main thing is raising some money for a great cause and hopefully I can do that."
