Understrength Aussies post 5-194 in T20

Stand-in skipper Matthew Wade has top-scored for Australia in their Twenty20 clash with India. (AAP)

An understrength Australia have scored 5-194 in their second Twenty20 against India at the SCG, where a caretaker captain's knock from Matthew Wade ended prematurely after a bizarre mix-up with Steve Smith.

Wade was run out on 58 after a breakdown in communication with batting partner Smith.

Smith, who was on three at the time of Wade's dismissal, scored 46 from 38 balls.

Glenn Maxwell (22) and Moises Henriques (26) also kept the scoreboard ticking over, while Marcus Stoinis helped Australia take 17 runs off the final over of their innings.

Thangarasu Natarajan snared a tidy 2-19 in the absence of rested quicks Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.

The hosts opted against rolling the dice on skipper Aaron Finch, who suffered a glute injury in their series-opening loss at Manuka Oval.

David Warner remains on the sidelines because of his groin injury, while star pacemen Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were also unavailable.

Cummins is being rested from the entire T20 series, Starc has been released from the squad on compassionate grounds, and Hazlewood has a sore back.

Wade, opening alongside D'Arcy Short in a rejigged batting order, led his side to a promising score of 1-68 from seven overs before a moment of madness ended the eighth over.

Wade gave Virat Kohli some catching practice in the covers, only for India's skipper to spill the ball.

Smith and Wade both suddenly found themselves standing in the middle of the pitch, with the latter having turned to the pavilion and given up hope of a reprieve from Kohli.

Kohli couldn't help but chuckle after returning the ball to keeper KL Rahul, who whipped off the bails as Wade shot Smith a dirty look before trudging off the field.

Debutant Daniel Sams, who was presented his cap by selector and former skipper George Bailey, and recalled paceman AJ Tye have joined Adam Zampa and Mitchell Swepson in Australia's new-look attack.

Sams, who claimed a league-best 30 wickets at 15.4 during the preceding BBL season, finished eight not out.
