The City of London is one of the world’s top financial centres, home to many big banks and global finance companies. Yet despite being one of the most influential parts of the UK, the City’s inner workings are shrouded in secrecy. If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on inside London’s mysterious ‘Square Mile’, don’t miss out on this myth-busting masterclass with Joris Luyendijk, author of Swimming with Sharks: My Journey Into the World of the Bankers.
During the class, you’ll receive unique insights into the City and the global financial system, and learn about Joris’ experiences interviewing hundreds of bankers and financial workers. Over the course of the evening, Joris will argue that we need to go beyond “banker-bashing” and explore how the deeper problems with our banking system might be resolved. You might be surprised how straightforward the solutions could be…

Joris Luyendijk is the author of Swimming with Sharks: My Journey Into the World of the Bankers. In 2011, Guardian Books sent him into the City of London to talk to hundreds of bankers and financial workers. Breaking strictly imposed codes of secrecy, these insiders discussed everything from their working conditions to how little has changed since the 2008 crash. Joris also used to write the Guardian’s Banking Blog, which looked at the world of finance from an anthropological perspective. He tweets @jorisluyendijk.
