'Underrated' Scottish island named one of the best places to visit in the UK

THIS "underrated" island in Ayrshire, often seen as "Scotland in miniature," has been named one of the best places to visit across the UK.

The Isle of Arran was named alongside a number of places across the country, including London and Eryri National Park (commonly known as Snowdonia).

Introducing the ranking, the prestigious travel magazine Lonely Planet said: "From the waves breaking against the White Cliffs of Dover to the soaring Scottish Highlands, the UK is an ancient and starkly beautiful land.

"But within these wild scenes is a country with a dense cultural legacy stretching back centuries, offering fascinating sojourns into music, literature, food and much more."

Discussing the Isle of Arran in Ayrshire, Lonely Planet said that the "underrated" island is often called "Scotland in miniature".

This, according to the publication, was thanks to its "ragged mountains" and "rolling fields" further to the south.

During the summer months, known locally as "busy season", flowerbeds are said to "burst with colour" while heather offers a "purple tint" to the hills, according to Visit Arran.

"Be sure and keep an eye out for dolphins and porpoises around the shoreline, and whilst you’re there, take a dip in the clear seawater yourself!

"Key events are Arran Farmers’ Show and Brodick Highland Games. These events are both held in August and have been going on for hundreds of years (literally)."

Other islands across Scotland were praised by Lonely Planet, including the Isle of Mull, which was said to be home to some of Scotland’s most elusive wildlife, including the white-tailed eagle.
