Underrated Bengals story to watch: Rodney Anderson’s comeback bid

The Cincinnati Bengals have a surprisingly big number of storylines to track over the summer given the roster overhaul and fresh vibes around the team.

One potentially lost in all the noise? The Rodney Anderson comeback.

Anderson, a sixth-round pick in 2019, hinted at his big upside before suffering a season-ending injury in a preseason game.

He recently caught up with Dan Hoard on the “Bengals Booth Podcast” and talked about the mishap:

“Of course it was very disappointing that I didn’t get to play my first NFL season, but God has plans that I can’t understand,. So just kind of got to roll with the punches and take each day as it comes…I mean, it’s tough. You don’t want it to happen to you. But like I said, God has plans that we really don’t understand. So I just try to trust in that and whatever happens next, I’ll just take it as it comes.”

Anderson says his comeback bid is going very well and he’s working out locally and holding online meets with trainers.

He’s also a big believer in this year being a big turnaround for the team.

“Right now I’m just anxious to get started,” Anderson said. “I feel confident in myself, and I also feel confident in the team. I feel like it’s going to be a way better season than last year. I just think it’s going to come together.”

Anderson was a bit of a luxury pick for a team already coasting pretty with Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard in the backfield, as well as fellow sixth-rounder Trayveon Williams. But he’s been wildly productive when healthy and he’s versatile, meaning he’s the type of elite backup capable of stepping in should the guys in front of him have to miss time.

And heading into the big unknown that is this season thanks to non-football reasons, Anderson entering it healthy and ready to produce is a great sign for Joe Burrow and the team’s outlook.
