Underpass near Yate Shopping Centre faces closure because of anti-social behaviour

There are plans to close off an underpass near Yate Shopping Centre because it attracts anti-social behaviour.

South Gloucestershire Council wants to introduce a public space protection order restricting access to the underpass crossing Kennedy Way which links Sundridge Park to South Parade at the shopping centre.

The authority has said the subway attracts “anti-social behaviour, resulting in it being covered with broken glass and drug related litter”.

The council say it is unpleasant and potentially dangerous for people to use.

If the protection order goes ahead a barrier would be installed at each end of the underpass.

South Gloucestershire Council has said pedestrians should not be adversely affected by the closure as there are two “controlled surface crossings” nearby.

It also said a pedestrian count showed that usage of the underpass was low and the majority of people use the surface crossing instead.

Members of the public are invited to have their say on the scheme from now until Wednesday, December 4. All details are available on the council's website.
