An underground fire that started more than a year ago has started to spread.
The sub-surface blaze broke out in March last year, at the Leigh Reclamation Land Holding, known as Queensway tip, in Wigan.
Last August, council bosses said the fire 'posed no imminent danger if left well alone', the Manchester Evening News reports.
But thermal images from a drone camera, organised by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), suggest the fire has continued to burn and spread.
Wigan Council and GMFRS have monitored the sub-surface fire and fences have been put up around the site.
The cordon is in place between Queensway and Green Lane, near to the Higher Folds estate, in Leigh, to protect residents.
Wigan Council posted an update of the situation today on Facebook and urged members of the public to keep out of the site.
Alongside a video that shows the extent of the spreading fire, a council spokesperson said: "Alongside Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, we would like to encourage all members of the public to keep out of the site at Queensway in Leigh.
"It is important that people respect the fence and keep out signs for their own safety. We will continue to work with colleagues to monitor the site."
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service station manager Chris Evans said analysis of thermal imaging cameras showed the fire had spread to a nearby BMX track.
He said: "About eight months ago, we came to visit the site to make a video with our partners from Wigan Council and also to do an overflight of the site using our specialist drone with a thermal imaging camera.
"The footage from that was overlayed with the new footage from today and what it does is suggest is there has been significant footprint creep, which would suggest that the fire has spread now and is impinging on the BMX track.
"Evidence would show that this is true. We've got trees that have fallen and you've got smoke from the scene behind us as well."
